Okay, my garden family, I have some news. I just passed my Certified Herbalist course! I learned so much through videos, demonstrations, and books. One thing that caught my attention was the information I learned about the Prickly Pear Cactus. I just HAVE to share this with you!
The Prickly Pear Cactus, or Opuntia Ficus-indica, grown in desert regions across New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, and even parts of Florida. It is edible as a fruit AND a vegetable, and it stores water in both the pads and the fruit.
They can grow up to 16 feet tall, and the flower and fruit grow directly on the leaf pad. They have large prickly spines and small hair-like spines. The fruit is a berry and contains many seeds.
If you char the spines off and peel the skin, you can use the leaf pads, as well as the fruit. Both are tasty! The leaf pads can be sliced and used in stir-fries, soups, or smoothies. The fruit can be cooked and strained of seeds, using the fruit in smoothies or juices.
So why is this veggie-fruit so good for you?
It is very anti-inflammatory.
It helps control blood sugar in diabetes.
It supports the pancreas and promotes the production of insulin.
It helps with arthritis and joint pain due to inflammation.
Reduces plaque in the arteries, which means lower risk of heart disease.
Reduces cholesterol.
Enhances blood circulation to the entire body.
Restores the body.
Reduces fatigue.
Relieves sore, injured muscles.
Relieves inflammatory diseases like eczema, psoriasis, and hives.
It's no wonder this cactus is so popular! So the next time you're in the desert and come across one of these big guys, CAREFULLY cut off a pad with a fruit, and char those spikes off. Peel the skin, cook and strain the fruit, then add your "natural medicine" to anything you prefer.
If you have or plan to try this, please leave a comment below telling us how you used it! I'd love some more ideas!
Thanks for reading,
